Yet Christ is alive, at the right hand of the Father, and is as near to us as the preaching of the gospel. We do not even have to go get this message; we do not have to make it relevant, exciting, or living and active. Simply by virtue of what it is (the preaching of Christ) and the one who brings it (the Spirit), this Word is effective. Furthermore, God brings it to us through a herald while we sit. He appoints and sends ambassadors to declare this news. They do not send themselves, but are sent. Unlike the false prophets in Jeremiah 23, they have stood in God’s council.
